The Dreamers and Their Dreams

It's impossible to measure or understand all that was lost with the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Francis Kennedy eight weeks apart in 1968. King was 39, Kennedy 42. They had each accomplished much, but it was what they might have done if they had lived that haunts the country to this day. All these years later Dr. King continues to inspire us to dream and Robert Kennedy to remind us that it is not too late to seek a newer world. 

It all somehow became more real when my friends and I flew to LA to be part of national talent show the day Robert Kennedy died. We stayed in a hotel a few blocks from the Ambassador and visited the site where Kennedy had been shot. 

Years later I became part of a number of Civil Rights Pilgrimages to visit places in the South important to the Freedom Struggle. In Memphis we would form a circle in the parking lot of the Lorraine Motel below the balcony where Dr. King was shot and sing "We Shall Overcome."

May the dreams forever outlive the dreamers.
