Fifty Years Ago Today...
Fifty years ago today Walter Cronkite told America that the Viet Nam War could not be won. He said this after visiting that war torn country and seeing with his own eyes what the top American commander, General William Westmoreland, told him about military victories did not match up with facts on the ground. Cronkite’s stark assessment was the beginning of a year of cascading events that would bring this nation to a boil and nearly to its knees.
Over the next ten months I will be commenting on moments historical and personal that in many ways continue to resonate to this day. (Can it really be fifty years this December when I was invited to become a member of The Brothers Four?)
There is a link here to an article in the New York Times today talking about Cronkite’s pronouncement as well as a video and an audio recording of a song I wrote some years ago – 1968 - that talks about that amazing year half a century ago.
