From a Melting Pot to a Steaming Cauldron
The Melting Pot that is America has turned into a Steaming Cauldron. An old white man at the top constantly stirs and adds to the heat. The President somehow finds nice words to say about Neo-Nazis and White Supremacists while struggling to say kind things to Americans who may identify as Muslims or Mexicans. He offends the sacrifice of every person whose name is on the wall of the Viet Nam Memorial by claiming his “personal Viet Nam” was not getting venereal disease from all the women he slept with while those now immortalized in black granite were dying. He then has the audacity-or shamelessness-to lecture from his bully pulpit that the quiet protest of African American athletes disrespects war veterans. (Does he say this truly knowing that a disproportionate number of non-white Americans died fighting in Viet Nam?)
We are divided as a nation. We are told that every day. Yet all of us who love this country pledge allegiance to: “one nation under God (in the many ways we choose to define that word) indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”
Maybe today it would be worthwhile for all Americans to examine a coin we often find in our pockets or purses. On every coin will be these words: E Pluribus Unum. From Many One. No matter what anyone might tweet in the middle of a long and restless night, those words remain a promise our country was built on and, I believe, continues to aspire to.
