For As Long As It Takes
Everything changed the Monday after Thanksgiving in 1995 when McCoy called to say he needed to see me. When? I asked. Now, he said. An hour later we were sitting at a restaurant on the north end of Lake Washington. The wind was blowing the rain against the windows as I waited for him to start talking.
In the video here McCoy describes better than I ever could where he was and how he was feeling. He sings a couple of songs and shares words from the heart. The audio recording “The Moment of Truth” also talks about that night.
What I will add is what a gift it is when someone trusts you enough to share who they are in their darkest moments. That trust allowed me to see McCoy in ways I had never seen him before and for us to go places together I never imagined we would or could.
That night I promised him I would be there for him for as long as it took. The song “As Long As It Takes" is an expression of that promise.
