The Brothers Four at 60

Sixty years ago on Spring Break from the University of Washington, The Brothers Four drove Bob Flick's dad's station wagon from Seattle to San Francisco with the hopes of singing at the Hungry i. They did. Dave Brubeck's manager, Mort Lewis, was in the audience. He told the guys that he would become their manager if Columbia Records signed them. They did and he did. Within a year and a half the guys had a number two song in the world (Greenfields), an Academy Award nominated song (Green Leaves of Summer), a performance at the Kennedy Inauguration, and a series of college concerts that put them right in the middle of the folk revival. 

Fifty years ago Mike Kirkland left the group. I took his place. It has been quite an adventure ever since. The Graduation Celebration this Saturday night - April 27th - will include a few songs sung by members of the group. My hope is that Mike Kirkland will be there. It will be a special time. The event begins at 7 PM at the University Congregational church across the UW campus. (4515 16th Ave NE)
