The Banjo, America's Instrument

The Brothers Four

Question: What do The Brothers Four have in common with Mumford and Sons?

Answer: Both perform using Deering banjos.

Thanks to the success of groups like the Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons the banjo is enjoying another surge in popularity.
Dave Guard of The Kingston Trio almost singlehandedly made the banjo cool for a generation growing up in the 50’s and early 60’s. Myself included. Eddie Peabody popularized the plectrum banjo beginning in the 1920’s. Earl Scruggs did the same for the bluegrass style named for him in the 40’s. Pete Seeger brought national attention to folk style banjo a few years later.
The Brothers Four try to weave these various banjo styles into every two-hour performance.

In this week's Blog the video shows the various banjo styles while the audio is from a Brothers Four performance and is an example of the Plectrum banjo style.
