Sharing the stage with Tom Paxton
Growing up The Kingston Trio and Tom Paxton were my biggest musical inspirations and influences. Last weekend The Brothers Four performed in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with both The Kingston Trio and Tom Paxton.
While The Brothers Four have performed with The Kingston Trio a number of times this was the first time I’ve spent time or shared the stage with Tom Paxton. I was able to tell him at dinner that the first time I sang with Mike McCoy (now nearly 50 years ago) we sang songs out of a Tom Paxton songbook.
At the end of last weekend’s show we all got on stage together and sang Tom’s song “Rambling Boy.” I got to sing a solo with him standing a few feet away and looking right at me. I felt like a little kid.
One of my favorite songs of his has always been “Can’t Help But Wonder Where I’m Bound.” When people like me tell him how we learned to play the guitar singing that song his reply is to say that he did too. The video is the Campfire Song from Campfire 15. http://markpearsonmusic.com/podcast/campfire-15
Thanks, Tom, for continuing to inspire us to make us laugh to think to feel and especially to sing.
