Visiting my folks in South Africa 1979
Solo
Visiting my parents in South Africa was an important part of my starting over after a divorce and not quite “making it” in LA. The country was a tragically beautiful place filled with contradictions living with Apartheid. With that as a backdrop it was a chance to begin in some ways a new relationship with my parents and so with myself. Traveling and so temporarily stepping out of my life has always been an important part of my life never more so than the summer of 1979.
The song included here, “One Love and Two Lives,” is a song I wrote for my folks and sang at some concerts around the time of my 50th birthday in 1997. A few months later I sang the song at my dad’s memorial service.
