Celebrating The Longest Night of the Year

Solo

For those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere this is the longest night – the shortest day - of the year. We welcome the coming of the light in many different ways. We decorate our dwellings, inside and out, with lights. We gather together, build fires, sing songs, tell stories. We look forward to the dawning of a new day, to the coming of a new year. In the midst I would invite us to take a moment and celebrate the darkness. As this song suggests, it is “only in the darkness we ever truly see enough to find and face our fears and finally set them free.”

Only in the Darkness

Comes a time those fears within us are the ones that we must face
That primeval forest beckons us into its darkest place
While we know it’s in that darkness that deliverance is found
We also know how easy it would be to turn around
For each step is filled with terror every moment filled with doubt
That even if we find those fears we won’t find our way out
And then suddenly it’s quiet and we’re painfully aware
That wherever we’ve been goin’ at last we are there
Chorus
It is only in the darkness we can see the light
Only in the darkness we may face the night
Only in the darkness we ever truly see
Enough to find and face our fears and finally set them free

At that moment in the forest as we face our darkest side
See ourselves for the first time in a wholly/holy different light
If only for an instant there is nothing that we fear
All we were and are and will ever be it’s here
And while nothing’s really different truly everything has changed
We have reached some understanding that we simply can’t explain
And then it dawns upon us that we know and we are known
And we’re no longer in the forest we are on our way back home
Chorus
Only in the darkness we can see the light
Only in the darkness we may face the night
Only in the darkness we ever truly see
Enough to find and face our fears and finally set them free
