In this episode we revisit America in Black and White from One of Those Times in a Life
In the fall of 2010 as I was getting ready to share my story – to share One of Those Times in a Life – I had recently finished walking 70 miles of the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainier with a friend of mine. Inspired by that very real mountain I created an imaginary one complete with virtual campfires – each campfire containing a song – a story – and a log of the journey. Before starting out I somehow saw my life as made up of seven stages and chose to explore each stage around seven campfires.
While I grew up in Spokane, Washington I’d been enthralled by popular folk music of the late 50’s and early 60’s, like a lot of Baby Boomers I realized my early musical education - appreciation – and sometime obsession - was bracketed by two Sunday nights sitting in front of a black and white television watching the Ed Sullivan show. The first was September 9, 1956 when Elvis Presley changed everything - the way we listen to music – the way we look at the world – the way we see as our place in that world - the 2nd was February 9, 1964 when The Beatles brought us to our feet 86 days after President Kennedy’s murder had brought us and our country to its knees.
